Shadows Greet Us
by Richard Smith
Beneath the trees
After the leaves have formed,
there are great shadows
interspersed with reflections of soft light
from nearby puddles.
deposited by a recent rain.
Shadows that greet us,
welcome us into their
unexplored, cool darkened imperfections.
A haven from the suns heat
that weighs heavily upon us,
how many birds have taken shelter
among these trees?
swooping and gathering, bustling about
among the branches beneath
these protective canopies of green,
bringing their songs with them,
Disrupting the silence with sounds
not like the rustling of
the winds, but with trilling melodies
filling the trees with joyous music
until suddenly as one, they wrap
themselves in a whirring surge
of dark wings and quickly disappear
into the hot summer sky.
